| In 1945, Ernie Wells and Sam Kross opened a bar they would later call Kross Lounge. When Sam Kross died, Ernie bought out Sam's share, and in 1963 opened a restaurant in the building next to the bar, which he named Ernie's Steakhouse. This explains the somewhat perplexing puzzle of why the business has two names. Almost from the beginning, Kross Lounge/Ernie's Steakhouse has been one of the most popular places to dine in Eastern Jackson County. Kross Lounge has been a popular hangout for local politicians, professional ballplayers, and local tradesmen of all walks of life. Most of the world's problems are discussed at the infamous "round table". Ernie Wells passed away in 1973 and his oldest son John took over the business. He credited the success of Ernie's Steakhouse to "serving the kind of food you would expect to get at home." John made Kross Lounge and Ernie's Steakhouse what it is today. John retired in 2004 and sold his business to his longtime friend and employee Valerie Soule, and her husband Christopher. The two families have formed a unique bond and we are honored to have Agnes and Ruth Wells continue to work with us. Sadly, John passed away in 2005. However, we are continuing to carry on the traditions, exceptional food, and fun that families and friends have gathered here to enjoy for more than sixty years. We would like to thank all of our customers for your continued patronage and support. Valerie and Christopher Soule |
